Elevating your personal production value

If you are leading a meeting virtually, you want to give yourself time to check what we call your personal production value — how you show up on your video box based upon your webcam and audio setup.

Paying attention to your lighting, background, camera position, and audio quality aren’t signs of vanity. They’re signs of respect for those who are joining you on the call. You want them to be able to communicate with you as easily as possible. In other words, attending to your on-camera presence is not about you; it’s about them, your team.

When leading a meeting virtually, how you appear on screen will also dictate how your team will. If you join your virtual meeting in your pajamas with your face in shadow and a persistent hum in your audio, you will likely find it difficult to inspire your team to greatness. You are also sending a dangerous message to your team; you don’t care how you show up for your meeting, so they shouldn’t care how they show up either.

As a meeting leader, you want to make sure you are setting a good example by showing up in a polished and professional manner, and that means taking the time to check how you appear in your little video window.

Run through this checklist before the rest of your attendees join:

Is your camera at eye level? You want your audience to feel like you are looking directly at them, not looking down at them or looking up at them, when you look into the camera lens.

Are you situated squarely in the frame? You don’t want to cut off any body parts like your chin or forehead. Try to take up at least three-quarters of the box with your body so you have maybe three fingers worth of space between the top of your head and the top of your screen.

Is your face well lit? Focus on lighting up your face so people can read your facial expressions.

Is your background free of distractions? Try to keep your background neutral with perhaps one conversation starter if appropriate.

Is your audio coming through loud and clear? Most platforms have a way to test your microphone and speakers prior to the meeting getting underway.
